The Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research is proud to partner with Pima County Conservation Lands and Resources on Living River of Words, an innovative program that connects youth to the wonders of water through the powerful intersection of art and science. Our collaboration brings an exciting new dimension to environmental education, inviting students ages 5 to 19 to explore their local watersheds through creative expression. Students will participate in field-study trips along local waterways, collecting water quality data, discovering local ecosystems, and engaging in reflective experiences that translate scientific observations into poetry and visual art.
Our newest art exhibit showcases the remarkable work emerging from this partnership, highlighting student entries that capture the intricate relationship between scientific observation and artistic interpretation. Through this program, students develop critical skills in both scientific inquiry and creative expression, learning to see their local environment through a holistic lens. By encouraging young people to document their observations, ask questions, and express their insights through art and poetry, we aim to foster a deeper connection to the natural world and inspire future environmental stewards.
The Living River of Words collaboration offers K-12 environmental science classes that go beyond traditional classroom learning, providing hands-on experiences that connect students directly with their local watersheds. Participants will have the opportunity to submit their work to the annual Living River of Words Youth Poetry and Art Contest, with a submission deadline of February 1, 2025, giving students a platform to share their unique perspectives on water, environment, and community.
